Tisno, Croatia: the Bridge, the Festivals and What Else Is Actually There

Tisno is fifteen minutes from our front door, and it is the one place nearby that guests get wrong in both directions. Some arrive expecting a Dalmatian old town and find a working village. Others hear “the festival place” and write it off entirely, which means missing the strangest and best thing about it: the town is cut in half by a channel thirty-eight metres wide, and the only road across is a drawbridge that stops for boats on a published timetable.

Get the timetable right and Tisno is an easy afternoon. Get it wrong and you sit in a queue watching a mast go by.

This post was first written in 2020 and has been rebuilt from scratch for autumn 2026, because almost every date in the old version had gone stale.

What Tisno actually is

Tisno sits at the narrow strait that separates the island of Murter from the mainland — the name means “narrow” — with houses on both sides and the channel running between them. The Tisno tourist board puts the width of that channel at 38 metres and dates the earliest records of the settlement to 1567, during a period of increasingly frequent Ottoman raids. (Our old version of this post said the fifteenth century. That was wrong, and it is now right.)

It is small. The 2021 census counted 1,192 people in Tisno itself and 2,908 across the whole municipality (which also takes in Betina and Jezera).

What Tisno does not have is a monumental old town. There are handsome stone houses and narrow lanes, a couple of baroque churches and a waterfront to walk, and that is about the size of it. If you want carved portals and Venetian squares, go to Šibenik or Trogir instead. Tisno is a place to spend three hours, not three days.

The bridge, and why you should care

The old stone crossing was built at the start of the eighteenth century and opened by being pushed sideways by hand. It was replaced in 1968 by the movable bridge that is there now, renovated several times since, and it remains the only road link between Murter island and the mainland. When it goes up, everything stops — cars and pedestrians alike.

The Municipality of Tisno publishes the schedule. For the 2026 summer season, its notice of 29 May sets it out as follows:

Two sources disagree here, so plan for the worse one. The municipality’s own summer notice lists two daily openings, at 09:00 and 18:00. The tourist board’s bridge page lists only the 18:00 one for summer. The municipality is the authority that operates the bridge and its notice is the more recent of the two, so treat 09:00 as real and leave twenty minutes of slack either side. If you are driving back from Murter for a lunch booking, that is the difference between arriving and apologising.

The winter schedule is the one that catches people out in autumn: from 16 September the bridge only lifts on Mondays and Fridays, so for most of the week it is simply a road.

The festivals: what is there now, and what has gone

Tisno’s reputation abroad is built on The Garden Resort, a site on Ul. Petrića Glava on the edge of town that hosts a run of electronic music festivals every summer. In 2026 there were eight, back to back, from the operator’s own listings:

That is nine weeks of the summer with a festival running for seven of them, and the Croatian trade press reported the resort expecting more than 40,000 visitors across the season.

Two things have changed since the old version of this post. SUNcéBeat, which ran at Tisno for years and was on our 2020 list, is no longer on the schedule — it does not appear anywhere in the 2026 season, and the organisers have announced a Portuguese edition instead. We could not load SUNcéBeat’s own site to confirm the move in their words, so take the Portugal part as reported rather than verified; the part we can verify is that it is not in Tisno. Going the other way, Terminal V and Balance are new arrivals that did not exist here in 2020.

For 2027, only one date is nailed down at the time of writing. Hospitality on the Beach’s own booking system lists 30 June – 5 July 2027 at The Garden Resort, with entry starting at £60. Love International 2027 is being listed by ticket sites as 7–13 July, but the festival’s own FAQ page still showed the 2026 dates when we checked on 8 September 2026, so we are not going to present that as settled. Check the organisers directly before you book flights.

The honest downside. If you are coming for a quiet family week, July and August in Tisno are not that. Accommodation in the town gets scarce and expensive, the roads are busier, and the sound carries across the water at night. If you are coming for a festival, the reverse problem applies: the resort’s own apartments and glamping fill early, and the festivals’ own guidance points people at rentals in Tisno, Jezera, Murter and Pirovac — which is where we are, and why our July and August fill up the way they do.

Getting there is easier than the map suggests. Love International’s FAQ puts Zadar airport at roughly 40 minutes by car and Split at about 60.

The town’s own summer, which is a different thing entirely

Alongside the festivals, Tisno runs its own programme — Kulturno-zabavno ljeto — which in 2026 ran from 6 July to 22 September. It is klapa singing, local food nights and village competitions, and it costs nothing.

Two events are worth planning around, though neither has published a 2027 date yet:

Igre na korentu — games played in the strait beside the bridge, using the fierce current (korenat) that gives the event its name as the obstacle. Teams from the mainland side and the island side compete at log-pushing, diving for letters, filling barrels and bursting balloons mid-jump. The tourist board describes it as a late-July fixture; other local listings put it on the first Sunday in August. We could not find a municipal notice pinning a 2026 date, so ask at the tourist office when you arrive rather than trusting a number you read online.

The international donkey race (Međunarodna trka tovarov) — held on Trg Rudina at 20:30, with a lottery and a band afterwards. The municipality’s notice for the 2025 running gives Saturday 9 August, 20:30. Assume an early-August Saturday evening and confirm nearer the time.

Tisno Trail has moved, and this is the correction we are gladdest to make. The old version of this post had it on 30 May with two distances. The municipality’s 2026 announcement gives Saturday 6 June 2026, 9:00 am, with three categories: 5 km (Oko Dvora), 9 km (Oko Mista) and 20 km (Oko Otoka). If you run, the 20 km loop around the island is the one with the Kornati views.

Vransko jezero, twenty minutes north

The largest natural lake in Croatia starts just up the coast, and it is the best half-day out from Tisno that does not involve a boat. The park’s own figures: 57 km² of protected area, of which the lake itself is 30.02 km², with 256 recorded bird species and 102 of them nesting inside the park. The ornithological reserve was designated in 1983, the whole area became a nature park in 1999, and it was listed as a Ramsar wetland in 2013.

Our 2020 version said 234 bird species. The park now says 256. We have taken the park’s number.

Prices come from the park’s published 2026 price list:

One ticket covers all three info centres — Kamenjak, Prosika and Crkvine — on the day you buy it. The Kamenjak viewpoint is the one to do if you only do one: a panoramic trail with the lake on one side and the sea and islands on the other.

Two caveats. The electric boat does not sail in bad weather or when the lake is low, and visits to the ornithological reserve itself have to be arranged with a guide rather than wandered into.

The Roman site nobody stops at

Between Pirovac and Tisno, at the head of the Pirovac channel, there is a site that would be signposted from the motorway in most countries and here has a gravel car park. Ivinj is three settlements stacked on one another: a Roman villa rustica, an early Christian basilica with a baptistery built into it, and a medieval church of St Martin with a cemetery around it. Excavation recovered 11 late-antique and 486 medieval graves.

The dating in our 2020 version was off. The site’s own material puts the villa in the ancient period with the basilica in the fourth or fifth century; we previously wrote “second or third century” for the villa and “mid-fifth century” for the basilica as though both were settled. The finds themselves are not on site — they are displayed in the Archaeological Collection of St Martin, in the basement of villa Katunarić in Tisno.

Swimming

The town beach is Jazina, in Tisno itself: shallow, part shingle and part concrete, busy with families and picigin players in August. It is convenient rather than beautiful.

The short version

• Tisno is a fifteen-minute drive from Villa LAVA — just under nine kilometres — and worth an afternoon, not a week.
• The drawbridge is the thing to plan around. In summer it lifts daily at 09:00 and 18:00 for about twenty minutes each time, and all traffic stops. From 16 September it only lifts on Mondays and Fridays at 09:00.
• The Garden Resort ran eight festivals between 1 July and 31 August 2026. SUNcéBeat has left; Terminal V and Balance have arrived. For 2027, only Hospitality on the Beach’s dates (30 June – 5 July) are confirmed by the organiser.
• July and August in Tisno are loud and full. That is a feature or a fault depending on why you came.
• Tisno Trail is now 6 June, with 5 km, 9 km and 20 km courses — not 30 May, and not two distances.
• Vransko jezero costs €6 for an adult and €15 for a family, and has 256 recorded bird species.
• The 2027 dates for Igre na korentu and the donkey race were not published when we wrote this. Ask the tourist office rather than trusting an old listing — including, until today, ours.
